ACE: Unfinished, needs to be edited.
Before I can explain Ace, there are a few key things you need to know. Ace is a character that has been able to jump from place to place, due to his status as an assassin for the Joker, though, that only came pre-canon and was due to Ace and Julius not having roles (Julius had brought a young Ace into his home and Ace became very keen on becoming stronger to protect his hermit workaholic friend/guardian). They were roleless Role Holders, they had no exact place, though they had faces (which the majority of Hearts/Clover/April Season(Joker) do not).
What set off the whole situation was Julius being killed and the previous Executioner (This is Ace's current Role) coming to retrieve his clock. Instead of being able to retrieve it, Ace killed that man to prevent Julius's clock from being reset. A deal was struck and in return for Ace becoming the new Executioner – Julius would become the Clockmaker and remain around. However, a price was to be paid before hand, which is that Ace had to kill a different Julius before he could take that role. He did so, in front of a younger version of himself and really, set off a chain of events that have vast influence on their 'universe'.
There's also the fact that you need to understand the process of events that lead to where I'm taking Ace from. It goes like this, Alice is brought from her world (and her sister) to the Country of Hearts by Peter White (The White Rabbit) and Nightmare Gottschalk (The Caterpillar), trapped there by Peter locking her into a game to which she needs to fill a vial by meeting people. The next person she meets is Julius Monrey (Time) who explains there are three main territories for her to remain in, completely disregarding the idea that she could stay in the Clocktower (the only neutral zone in the Country of Hearts), in the Amusement Park, there's Mary Gowland (A pun on Merry Go Round) and Boris Airay (Cheshire Cat), there's the Hatter Mafia Family run by Blood Dupre (The Mad Hatter), his two gatekeepers (Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum) and his second in command, Elliot March (The March Hare), finally, there's the Castle of Hearts, Vivaldi (The Queen of Hearts) and her prime minister, Peter, not to mention our dubious knight, Ace, who is thought to be the Knight of Hearts.
Usually, what happens is Alice runs around, fills her vial and makes a choice to stay with whomever it is she stays with, the line of which I'm taking Ace from, it would be she's staying in the Castle of Hearts, but, what happens when Alice ends up comfortable, is a land shift and she ends up in the Country of Clover, but not without some casualties. Julius and Gowland are whisked away and what is there instead of the Clocktower and Amusement Park are the Tower of Clover and the Forest of Doors. Then comes April Season (Which is Joker no Kuni no Alice: Liars and Circus Game), that brings Julius and Gowland back, though takes no one.
So, let's actually start explaining Ace now.
Ace, the Knight of Hearts, is a man who never loses his smile. He can and will smile, laugh and joke with you one moment and then be at your throat the next, smile never once faltering and leaving his face. The knight has no problems with threatening the main character's (Alice Liddel) well being at any point in time, even if he does come to adore her (if only, due to the fact that he is enamored with her heart beat, it soothes him).
To completely understand Ace, you need to understand that he has an fierce loyalty to not, Vivaldi, the Queen of Hearts and the Ruler of the Country of Hearts, but to Julius, the Clockmaker and takes a drastic personality turn when he leaves 'Move'/Shifted Lands takes the Clock Tower away.
In Hearts, Ace is jovial, happy, smiling and eager to crack a joke or two (Even if some of them are perverse). Even Alice doesn't suspect that when the move happens, Ace's 'mask' would start to crack. He has a hidden side, perhaps the reason why he keeps most people, usually by using politeness, away and helping to maintain a healthy distance between themselves and his own being/ Alice and Julius are the only ones noted of where he does not use some sort of honorific for them (the most common was -san, however it doesn't translate as well).
He /is/ a knightly sort of guy, trying to lean away from things that make him seem like the villain, though it doesn't stop him from twisting peoples words around or provoking others if he wants to do something anyways.
Due to the various circumstances that lead them to this point. Ace hates his given role, though it's not specified if the Knight of Hearts is his role or just a position he holds, but he dislikes both it and his actual role, as Executioner and Warden of the Joker's Prison, also supposedly the cause of his ability to get lost for many time periods. This being said, he dislikes both roles because they get in the way of the only one he wants to do, which is collect clocks for Julius. Ace goes out of his way to collect the clocks for the man, even.
